The First Battalion Ninth Marines Association is proud to announce a Navy Cross award ceremony to honor Corporal Daniel Leroy Heller for his extraordinary bravery and dedication during Operation Dewey Canyon in the Vietnam War. The ceremony will be held on August 28, 2024, at 10 AM EST at Marine Barracks Washington, DC.
The Navy Cross, the second-highest military decoration awarded for valor in combat, will be presented to Corporal Heller for his heroic actions on February 13, 1969, in the A Shau Valley. Serving as First Squad Leader with Company C, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Corporal Heller, also known as "Duke," distinguished himself during a well-planned NVA ambush. Despite receiving facial wounds in the initial engagement, Corporal Heller exhibited exceptional courage by rescuing two wounded Marines who were dangerously exposed. He then single-handedly assaulted the ambush site, killing four NVA soldiers, which disrupted the ambush and allowed his squad to kill an additional eight NVA soldiers as they attempted to flee.
